Ahhh, the holidays. That time when you can eat chocolate chip cookies for breakfast, and who’s going to judge you?? For me, Christmas is less about the presents and more about the indulgence. Egg nog, mulled wine, gingerbread cookies…so many amazing treats to enjoy. But if you’re running low on holiday baking ideas, don’t stress, because I’ve put together this list of eight festive Christmas dessert recipes to get you right out of that rut!
1. Red velvet cupcakes by Preppy Kitchen
If you’ve never stumbled upon one of John Kanell’s blog posts or charming YouTube videos, you have been missing out! Not only is he a great teacher that shares great recipes, he’s got this warm and welcoming personality that I just can’t get enough of! He makes it easy to recreate incredible desserts, like moist and rich red velvet cupcakes!
2. Peppermint French Hot Chocolate
Does cozying up by the Christmas tree with a cup of French-inspired peppermint hot chocolate sound like a solid Christmas plan to you? ‘Cause I think this hot cocoa is the only thing I’ll need for every Christmas for the rest of my life! What I love most about this drink is that it’s rich and indulgent without being over-the-top. Just a few ingredients, five minutes on the stovetop, and this hot chocolate is all yours. Hear that sound? It’s Starbucks crying in the distance.
3. Literally the best brownies you’ll ever have
I’ve talked about this brownie recipe on my blog and even have an entire post dedicated to teaching you how to make them. The original recipe is from Tasty, and these brownies are the ones everyone goes NUTS over! I’ve never had anyone NOT love them. Fudgy, chocolate-y, moist, and EASIER to make than you think. Seriously, you need them in your life not just for Christmas, but, for like, always.
4. Apple hand pies by Sally’s Baking Addiction
I love Sally (who doesn’t, really?), and I love her recipes (again, who doesn’t?) When I was developing my recipe for peach hand pies, I drew a lot of inspiration from her caramel apple hand pies. Less work than a full-sized pie, but still just as delicious.
5. Authentic Jamaican Fruit Cake
Fruit cake often gets left on the back-burner because, admittedly, it’s not the most exciting dessert. But there’s NOTHING boring about our Jamaican version. Made with red porto wine, it’s moist, rich, and perfectly boozy. Trust me, I’m Jamaican.
6. Crispy chocolate chip cookies by Handle the Heat
If you find Tate’s cookies just as addicting as I do (I can never eat just one…or three), you’ll love Tessa Arias’s take on crispy chocolate chip cookies. Tessa is a brilliant, classically-trained pastry chef and food blogger with a few cookbooks up her belt too. She breaks her recipes down so thoroughly. Plus, she’s, like, the queen of cookies. Check her out.
7. Chai-Spiced Chocolate Chip Cookies
Pssst, Santa called, and he said he wants some variety with his Christmas cookies this year. So don’t just give him Tessa’s crispy cookies, leave out a batch of these chewy chai-spiced chocolate chip cookies too! They’re like if your favorite chai latte and your favorite chewy chocolate chip cookie became best friends!
8. Pumpkin Pound Cake
You’ve probably got a few cans of pumpkin puree leftover from Halloween/Thanksgiving, so put them to good use in this moist pumpkin pound cake. This recipe is, hands down, THE most popular recipe on my blog. It’s the reason October was such a successful month for us!
How can I describe this cake? It’s like soft fluffy pumpkin bread, in bundt form, topped with the loveliest cream cheese glaze. Maybe leave some slices for Santa (and some extras so Mrs. Claus can have a bite too!)
I’m really hoping you’ll give at least one of these eight festive Christmas dessert recipes a try this year! If you do, be sure to leave a comment or tag me on Instagram @samarafromscratch. I love to hear from you guys!
